Need help with powerbook pismo restart issue???

Hello,

My pismo was actually working just fine but I was compelled to hit the "restart" option anyway and now the computer won't fully restart.
The battery is charged and the power adapter is alive and well. The power buttion on the computer will activate the computer but the monitor will only display a white screen with a tiny folder icon alternating between a face and a question mark. Tried the restart button on the back panal but nothing doing. OS10.3

Does anybody know how I could fix this problem??? Please share....

Consequences of Intel move?

A little help here, please.

When Apple switches over to Intel chips next year, what does that mean for my existing iBook? Will Apple continue to make versions of OSX/XI/future implementations for previous hardware? And, in your opinion, how long will this older hardware be viable?

Also, what will be the difference in future in just buying OSX and installing it on an existing Intel-based PC? It'll be more than a bit of an ugly Mac experience, but is this what Apple is going for? I mean, it just seems that it'll be a lot cheaper and very similar to just buy the OS than the OS with the "official" Apple hardware to run it on.

Ideas?

Hiya, I'm waiting for a custom MacBook to be assembled here in Taiwan (it can take a week or two), and am starting to get my existing XP machine set up to be a RAID file server....BUT, errm....it occurred to me that I have NO idea how to get the Mac to attach to XP shares. I've stolen an iBook for testing, and am wrapped around the axel on this one, I'm SURE it is bonehead simple, and that my 20 years away from Mac is what's getting in the way....suggestions??

newbie seeking airport support ...

I just purchased a powerbook g4 from a friend. My roommate has a newer ibook. She can get wireless signal just fine in all parts of the house, but I have to sit outside with my computer tilted at a 45 degree angle to get a signal. Do I need a new airport card? Is there something I need to update or download? Any thoughts?

ColdFusion anyone?

I cant get it installed. Im trying to run the standalone self contained server. The install and web server connector process goes perfectly, but then when i try to login into the administrator i get a servlet error, 500 NULL, from the server. The onl thing ive done that i can think is to install the JRE update from apple that upgrades Java to 1.5.0. Thsi seems to me to be the cause because im getting java exceptions in the log. I can post the log if needed, but im really more interested if anyone else is experiencing this issue.

help - emergency!! can't reboot!

all of a sudden my ibook G4 stopped being able to boot past the startup screen (with the apple and the spinning wheel). everytime i reboot the computer it sits on that screen for hours. my computer has about 1.5GB of space left on it. there are important documents on it i need to access a.s.a.p.!

here's what i've done so far:

1. with the OSX install disc, tried to repair the permissions and disc from disc utility (with permissions it just stalled, with the disc a "non-fixable" disc error appeared)

2. booted into single user mode (command line interface) and tried fsck (or something like that - can't remember). it said it repaired everything, and when fsck was run again it said there were no problems. computer still wouldn't boot past the startup screen.

3. tried again to repair permissions and the disc with disc utility. this time it worked but the computer still wouldn't boot past the startfup screen.

4. tried re-mounting from the command line interface. still no luck.

if anyone has any suggestions or can tell me how to backup documents using the install disc, i would be tremendously thankful!

Shared internet Connection: Advanced Setup

Im sure thers a way to do this but i dont know where to begin...

Ive brought home the powerbook from the office to prep it for a ,eeting tomorrow. Unfotunately i dont have a router here at home. So i wanted to share my internet connection and ave acces to the PB via APF/SMB and ARD. However when you share a connection it turns the connected computer into a router essentially and there is no GUI for advanced setup to use port forwarding or configure NAT. Im sure theres a back door way by manually edditing some config files in the shell but im not sure what files i need to find. So how do i go about it? I realize its probably quite involved so im not asking for a step-by-step... i i jsut new what file si was looking for i could probably adpapt other intructions focused on servers/routers from the net somewhere.

Music editing

So I got really hooked on this PC program Goldwave for editing music (simple stuff--chopping a song in half, fading it, copying part of it and pasting it elsewhere). But alas, it is not available for macintosh.

What do you use on your Mac to do simple music editing? Can Garageband do this, or is that only for creating music from scratch?

Automounts

I was wondering if there was a way to automount a network share based on the user that logs in? Ive configured some dynamic mounts at work (using netinfo) for a couple network shares on various computers there. However I also regularly mount 1-3 of the drives/shares on my home machine periodicly throughout the day for various things. After awhile this gets old. Id like to set up an automount on login to my account but obviously i dont want someone else using the box to have access to my personal drives. None of my coworkers really need to stumble across all that midget porn...

Any thoughts?

Also, as an aside... when using a XP box is there a way to map a network (or generally connect to a network place using smb) when its not in the same subnet/domain? For some reason it dosent seem to work. Ive tried to set up a music share for the girl friend since her machine as an unfathombly small hard drive. Ive got her using ftp now but im thinking smb would be better.

And next time ill try not to use the word mount so much.

Connecting a PC to Apple Airport

I have a quick question that I hope you may either know the answer to or may be able to redirect me. I have fruitlessly searched the internet and Apple sites and found no answer ...

I have an airport wireless router that my Macs love. Two people have tried to connect PC laptops and gotten what I consider to be odd results: The computers see the connection and register a strong signal and good speed. But Internet Explorer does not work. It seems to feel that there is in fact no connection and tells me: "The Page Cannot Be Displayed." I have also tried the AOL preloaded onto one of the laptops and it likewise fails to see a connection.

I have to confess to being only vaguely familiar with Windows, but I have poked through the internet settings in IE Tools, but yielded no results.

Have you any advice on why two different PCs with wireless cards see my Airport Router and read its signal, yet the applications do not recognize it?

OS X over Windows or Linux

Hello, I got an audio engineering internship at a voice acting studio that uses Digital Performer for everything. I have a lot of DAW experience but it's all in Cubase on Windows. I don't have a mac, nor can I afford one at the moment, so I can't practice at home. Needles to say the ability to practice at home would be invaluable to speeding up the process of the internship actually turning into a job (which the studio incidentally needs too). My only hope for getting an immediate setup going would be if I could find a program that runs OS X over Windows or Linux...anyone know if this exists? (If Linux can run on top of Windows I don't see any reason why OS X shouldn't be able to, except for the fact that OS X is proprietary and Linux isn't. But perhaps Macintosh has seen some use in developing a program to do this or somebody has figured out a way to make OS X "think" it's running on a Mac.) Anyone know? I'm checking the internet too of course but this is worth a shot.

And in case your wondering the studio is aware of my lack of experience with Macs. I know my way around a *n?x system so I shouldn't have too hard a time picking it up.

Greetings,

I just started using Tribe.net this Thanksgiving so I’m still a newbie. I’m about to start my 1st moderated ‘mature’ tribe, which is dedicated to liberty.

Even though it will have a ‘mature’ designation it’s really not about pornography but instead the pursuit of personal freedom, total civil rights and protecting our planet.

Anyway, I’m in a rush to post my new tribe before the Tribe.net 12/20 change in TOU policy, I’ve just procured a domain name and I’m awaiting ICANN confirmation.

My question is about switching browsers in order to create a quick page within the domain register’s website while the domain name is temporarily ‘parked’ at aplus.net.

Currently I’m using OS X Tiger 10.4.2 on a G4 PowerBook with Safari 2.0.1 as the browser and Earthlink is my dial-up ISP.

I need to install Mozilla from version 1.4 and I’m downloading version 1.7.12 in order to create the temporary park page and then switch back to using Safari to finish up and present my new tribe.

1. Is there anything I should know about installing Mozilla?
2. Once I install Mozilla, how do I switch browsers?
3. Are there any potential conflicts switching between Safari & Mozilla browsers?

I’m not much of a slacker, but my back is up against the wall for the next 72 hours. I don’t wish to have s computer snafu and miss the deadline. Maybe I’m just being paranoid for no good reason but any advice or URL to provide answers would be greatly appreciated.

hi folks.
so i use skype,ore at least i try..i can send files,but not receive.
i opened my ports in the file share-firewal setings, in the system pref:
but as i added the last port numbers'for the skype acces'a little window opend telling me that i have a nother firewall some where on my h.d?
as far as i know i dont,i looked everywhere.
i do have to mention i used norton ones,but deleated al of that sind sit can give u problems .
could that be the problem,ore can some body help me here.

OSX 10.2.4 & 10.3/SAMBA 2.2.3a + WinXP = F!@#†N¢ B@$#@®D$

Trying to get access to a SAMAB share from Win XP pro SP2. The share is on a mac running 10.2.4 and SAMBA 2.2.3a. It worked perfectly for like a week. Now all of a sudden in the XP boxes are using the username "MachineName/Guest", where machine name is the NetBIOS name of the OSX box. Its greyed out.

Apparently a number of people have had this problem judging from my initial google results. However the only solution i found was to try Mapping a network drive instead of creating a network place. I tried that i get the same thing, however there is a link to "log on as a different user". Wheni click that i can enter a username of my choosing and a password. But after doign that it searches for a few seconds then brings back the logon screen with "MachineName/Guest" entered and it greyed out...

Ive also tried:

- Deleting the NetBIOS name altogether from Sharepoints interface
- Using USER instead of SHARE security
- Loggin on as every USER on the MAC
- Using no password for the Guest account
- Deleting and then creating the guest account again
- Changing the "guest" account to "Guest" and "GUEST"

Im totally stumped since it was just working the other day and i havent installed any updates on any of the machines.

Any thoughts... or better yet - Solutions??? :-)

Also slightly related.... Sometimes when i go to mount the windows machine we are using as a makeshift server, it cant find it.... the connection progress bar jsut keeps going but never connects. This happens often but not all the time. I can see the machine in my workgroup list from the connect to server menu...

Help with binding?

Hi, could use a li'l help.

I intended to borrow a friend's ableton live for a coupla days to see if I was interested in buying it or not, but at the end of the install process I got an error telling me that the installer could not create some folder because I did not have the proper permissions.

On top of that, now garageband won't load...when I check out the logfile in systemprefs, it says that garageband can't load because it is unbound, and its bindings can't be found, or somesuch.

I've tried reinstalling garageband (it's a silly little program, I know, but if this isn't working, I wonder what else might fail down the road, and I'd rather avoid the lengthy os x reinstall process), but no go. Btw, I'm on os x 10.3.3.

Any ideas what happened/what I can do to remedy the situation?

Faxing in Panther

Ok, I just got panther. I was excited that there is a feature that lets you fax from any word program. It's suppose to be simple. When I want to fax, I make sure I choose my internal modem, and the computer is hooked up to a phone line. But, I get the message "fax protocol error". What the hell is wrong? If anyone has suggestions, please let me know. Cause I'm about to kill my computer. thanks

ODBC and OSX 10.1.5

I wnt out and got the WACK from Macromedia Press. Im trying to get everything set up so i can do the tutorials. The only problem is the included DB for the projects is an MSAccess mdb andsince i only have OSX 10.1.5 there is not ODBC Administrator form me to set up a JDBC-ODBC bridge.

Ive been looking all morning and ive found a couple sites supposedly offering the software but then when i get to the downloads they only offer versions for 10.2+ or dont even list any OSX versions. (ive tried easysoft, openlink, and acutal technologies).

anyone have any ideas or work arounds?

I'm ready to make the switch, cept all my software won't run in X, so what is my best option?

I've been told that I should get another HD, partition it and install both 9 and X on it, then make my original HD a duplicate for back-up.
The main reason i want upgrade is so I can use my new ipod and take advantage of the imusic store.
