Hiya, I'm waiting for a custom MacBook to be assembled here in Taiwan (it can take a week or two), and am starting to get my existing XP machine set up to be a RAID file server....BUT, errm....it occurred to me that I have NO idea how to get the Mac to attach to XP shares. I've stolen an iBook for testing, and am wrapped around the axel on this one, I'm SURE it is bonehead simple, and that my 20 years away from Mac is what's getting in the way....suggestions??

Re: Soon to rejoin the realms of Mac, a question about XP as a file server....
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 7:59 AMOS X can easily attatch to Windows network shares.
- In the Finder, press cmd-k or select "Connect to Server..." from the "Go" menu.
- You'll then see the "Connect to Server" dialog box. From here you can:
a) click the "Browse" button and attempt to find your share on the network
or
b) just type the URL in the Server Address box, e.g. "smb://myserver.mydomain.com/myshare" or "smb://10.1.101.42/myshare"
- Finally, click "Connect" and voila

Re: Soon to rejoin the realms of Mac, a question about XP as a file server....
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 9:47 AMyou can also make a Network Volume (ie. Network Drive) that will mount in either /Network/Servers or /Network/Servers/serverName. YOu can find those directions here:
www.bombich.com/mactips/automount.html
I dont know if this is in those instructions, but if you want to use the host/computer name from windows instead of the ip you need to add either the Wrokgroup name before the computer name or simply change to that network group via Directory Access:
go to /Applications/Utilities/Directory Access
Check the SMB option and then click the configure button and type in the workgroup name... save out.

Re: Soon to rejoin the realms of Mac, a question about XP as a file server....
Fri, June 30, 2006 - 3:12 AMVERY cool! Thanks!! I got it to appear :-). Hmmm, so the rumors that its based on a BSD type OS seem to be true, hehe. In any case, I figure that even with the wait for native DualCore Photoshop, I'll STILL be more productive (Windows memory leaks are killing me, and rebooting is a 10 minute process).
Eventually, as I convert the rest of the business machines to mac, errrm....think I'll turn a Windows box into a Linux server, hehe (my goal is to be down to one XP machine by the end of next year, I'm becoming a Mac/Linux evangalist, I think....saw my mom's productivity tripple with a simple laptop switch, the AMAZING thing is that she hasn't had any sort of a system issue yet, after 6 months :-)....life is good).... -

Fri, June 30, 2006 - 3:37 AMhahah yeah i was pushing for either a OSX or Redhat server at work but the boss ended up going with windows b/c our contract tech guy talked her into Exchange server. ot that i complain about that all that much im jsut glad we actually have a rel server... and i do liek exchange... ofcourse i could have come up with something utilizing imap and ldap but whatever... still though ive got a 5 year plan to get all the windows workstations bye bye and mac minis for the business people. That is assuming im there for another 5 haha. -

Fri, June 30, 2006 - 4:05 AMLol, actually Exchange is sweet, I have to give Microsoft some serious credit there (although its been a LONG time since I was in that world and worked with it).
But yeah, my 13 year old is attending school online (errrm, we are physically living in Taiwan right now), and I'm trying to talk him into a MacBook as the PC replacement, but he has his heart set on a Mac Mini, he loves his big displays. The office workstations are going to be low end Minis also, the only thing they are used for is word processing and some simple advert designs. And the thing is, in Taiwan....Macs are cheaper for the horsepower you get :-). (the $300 PC never made it here). -

Oh i totally agree. But really i dont see anyone here being savvy or taking the time to get savvy enough to use the features you cant acheive with imap/ldap (shared calendars, task assignment, etc..). Plus all that stuff isnt compatible with thier mac client, Entourage. (Dont get me wrong Entourage is also my mail client of choice).
But yeah, i would have easily given that up for a mac or linux server since i also function as the on-site sysadmin to supplement the consultant we use. And since im much more familiar with *nix systems it would have been one less headache for me. Plus this protracts my hidden agenda... ie. the pc->mac switch :-)
